Sargi — the pre-dawn meal
Sargi is the meal eaten before sunrise on Karva Chauth. Traditionally sent by the mother-in-law, it gives the fasting woman strength for the long day ahead. It must be finished before sunrise — see your city's sunrise time on the home page.

Simple modern ideas
Whole-wheat paratha with paneer, a bowl of curd, a banana, a handful of soaked almonds and 2–3 glasses of water covers most of what you need. Eat slowly, keep it light, and avoid very salty items — they increase thirst through the day.
